MicroMaze 3.0

MicroMaze 3.0 was an autonomous robotics competition organized by the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society of the Informatics Institute of Technology in 2026. The event challenged students to build and program maze-solving robots, commonly known as micro mice, capable of decoding and navigating complex tracks without any human assistance or prior knowledge of the maze's size, layout, or obstacles. Participants had to rely heavily on advanced sensor technology and intelligent navigation algorithms, as their robots needed to evaluate the paths and find the exit as quickly and efficiently as possible. The competition was designed to push boundaries in the fields of robotics and artificial intelligence, rewarding teams that demonstrated speed, efficiency, and innovative engineering solutions. The 2026 campaign started with an ambassador recruitment drive in early June to build momentum across universities. The competition phase officially kicked off with a dedicated race week in early September, which allowed teams to refine their code during free practice sessions and a preliminary qualifier round. The journey culminated on September 20, 2026, with the MicroMaze 3.0 Finals held at the IIT GP Square, where the top qualifying teams competed in a high-stakes race against the clock to determine the ultimate champion.

CodeRally 7.0

CodeRally 7.0 is a national-level competitive programming challenge organized by the IEEE Computer Society Student Branch Chapter of the Informatics Institute of Technology. Billed as the ultimate competitive programming challenge, the event is tailored for university students across all skill levels to push their boundaries through strategic thinking, algorithm optimization, and raw technical discipline. The competition featured three difficulty tiers—Advanced, Intermediate, and Beginner—and attracted participation from over 35 universities, making it a massive collaborative and competitive ecosystem. The 2026 campaign unfolded over several months, starting with registrations and an awareness session in June and July. To equip participants for the intense coding battles ahead, the organizers hosted three major knowledge-sharing workshops. The first workshop in mid-July focused on the art of problem-solving and effectively using AI in competitive programming. This was followed by a second workshop in early August that delved into advanced tactics, complex algorithms, and system architectures, and a final virtual workshop designed to help teams perfect their strategies before the main competitions commenced. The competitive phase featured preliminary selection weeks and a virtual hackathon on August 29, which ultimately narrowed down the field for the grand finale. On September 5, the top-ranked teams engaged in a continuous 24-hour physical hackathon that tested their mental endurance, clean code architecture, and logical problem-solving under rapidly evolving constraints. Following the intense marathon, the victors were crowned at the Award Ceremony on September 13. In the Advanced category, Team BALANCE from the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology emerged as the champions, while Team Whatever from Edith Cowan University topped the Intermediate track, and BitMasters from the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka won the Beginner category.

Build with AI 2026 – IIT Buildathon

The Build with AI: IIT Sri Lanka Buildathon Kickoff was an insightful technology event held on July 19, 2026. It was organized by GDG Sri Lanka in collaboration with the IEEE Computer Society Student Branch Chapter of the Informatics Institute of Technology. The primary objective of the event was to introduce undergraduate students to the latest advancements in artificial intelligence while officially launching the highly anticipated IIT Buildathon. During the event, participants were provided with an engaging and hands-on learning experience focused on Google's cutting-edge AI technologies, including Gemini, the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, and Gemma. Through expert-led technical sessions, live demonstrations, and collaborative activities, students explored how modern AI tools can be leveraged to develop innovative solutions for real-world challenges. Industry professionals also shared practical insights into AI application development, emerging trends, and best practices for building intelligent software systems. Hosted at the IIT City Campus in Colombo, the kickoff event featured a structured agenda that included a welcoming address, a keynote session introducing the Google AI ecosystem, and dedicated technical sessions. Beyond the technical knowledge gained, participants had the valuable opportunity to collaborate with peers, interact with experienced professionals, and receive guidance for the upcoming Buildathon, ultimately fostering a strong, AI-focused developer community at the university.

CodeSprint 11 was the 11th edition of Sri Lanka's premier inter-university startup competition, organized by the IEEE Student Branch of the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT). Designed to empower young innovators to transform their raw ideas into launch-ready ventures, the competition challenged student teams of 3 to 6 members across three main tracks: Platforms, Intelligence, and Hardware & Security. The event provided a massive platform with a 1 million+ prize pool, drawing participants from numerous universities to engineer tech-driven solutions and pitch them to real investors. The competition progressed through a rigorous timeline from February to July 2026, advancing through the Envision, Execution, and Elevation phases before reaching the Technical Pitch and the Grand Finale. Throughout these stages, organizers hosted multiple knowledge-sharing workshops to help participants refine their prototypes and business strategies. Notable sessions included an Execution Phase workshop in May 2026 exploring how startups can leverage AI-powered software engineering, and Elevation Phase workshops in June 2026 that covered topics like integrating Ideamart APIs and mastering intrapreneurship to build fundable startups. The extensive journey concluded with a high-stakes Grand Finale held on July 11, 2026, at the DHPL Auditorium in Colombo. The top finalist teams presented their finalized startup solutions before a distinguished panel of industry judges. Team HydroTech from the University of Kelaniya emerged as the overall Champions. Team Hades from General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University secured the First Runner-Up position and also won the Most Innovative Integration Award for their exceptional use of Ideamart APIs and OmniAI. Meanwhile, Team ChloroCast from the Informatics Institute of Technology claimed the Second Runner-Up spot, capping off a highly successful season of fostering technology-driven entrepreneurship.

Designed to go beyond a typical tech event, VERTEX'25 created an engaging space where participants could build, learn, and connect with like-minded innovators in the field of robotics and automation. The event was conducted by Lecturer Mr. Janith Prabhanuka, who led the session through insightful and interactive discussions on automation technologies. His session encouraged students to think critically, understand real-world applications, and actively engage with emerging technological trends, setting a strong intellectual foundation for the rest of the day. VERTEX'25 featured interactive sessions and hands-on challenges that allowed participants to test their skills through robotics-based activities and real-world problem-solving scenarios. These challenges emphasized skill development, giving students the chance to gain practical experience that went well beyond theoretical knowledge. A key highlight of the event was the participation of SDGP featured teams, namely Novalith, Cultiveer, Raspberry, Vitisco, Remora, and Gappi AI. These teams actively shared their project journeys, the challenges they faced, and the solutions they developed throughout their SDGP experience. Their presentations and discussions provided valuable insights, inspired peer learning, and showcased innovative applications of robotics, AI, and automation in action. Through this spirit of collaborative innovation, participants worked together, exchanged ideas, and fostered a strong sense of teamwork and creativity. Overall, VERTEX'25 successfully served as a platform that empowered students to gain hands-on exposure, learn from experienced individuals, and envision their role in shaping the future of robotics and automation.

The Induction Session marked the official introduction to the IX 25 initiative, giving participants a clear overview of its purpose and structure right from the outset. The session walked attendees through the program's two-phase format, consisting of a Concept Round and a Final Round, with the top 10 finalists selected from the Concept Round advancing to the 24-hour Designathon. To ensure clarity and keep participants engaged from the start, the session included an interactive Q&A segment where all queries were addressed directly, giving attendees a chance to clear up any uncertainty about the process ahead. Overall, the Induction Session successfully set a strong foundation for IX 25, leaving participants well-informed and ready to take on the challenges of the initiative.

On September 28, 2025, they hosted an online awareness session to guide participants through the competition rules, share preparation strategies, and manage registrations. This preparation phase was closely tied to their HackSphere '25 initiative, acting as a direct launchpad for students to enter the global event. Following the preparation, IIT undergraduates formed multiple teams and competed in the 24-hour coding sprint. The YouTube interview series was a central highlight of ILLUMINATE’24, featuring some of Sri Lanka’s most prominent and successful entrepreneurs. Visionaries such as Mr. Yohan Liyanage, Founder & CEO of Altrium; Mr. Dilupa Pathirana, CEO of Barista; Ms. Bernadine Jayasinghe, Managing Director of IES; Mr. Peter D’Almeida, Founder & CEO of N*able; Mr. Dulith Herath, Founder & CEO of Kapruka; and Mr. Bhanuka Harischandra, Founder & CEO of Surge Global, shared their personal journeys and professional insights. Through these interviews, they provided practical advice, inspiration, and actionable tips to help aspiring entrepreneurs navigate the challenges of building and scaling a business. From October 26th to 27th, our IEEE Student Branch at IIT took part in the global 24-hour hackathon, IEEEXtreme 18.0, with over 200 teams and 550+ participants joining forces to test their coding skills in this intensive event. The hackathon was a powerful demonstration of our community’s commitment to excellence, as each team pushed the boundaries of creativity and resilience. The day was filled with intense coding sessions, problem-solving challenges, and the energy of collaboration as our participants tackled complex tasks from sunrise to sunrise. Among the extraordinary accomplishments, one team proudly claimed 1st place in Sri Lanka, positioning themselves in the prestigious top 100 globally. This outstanding achievement reflects not only the team’s hard work but also the dedication and preparation that our student branch invests in each participant’s journey. Many of our other teams also performed exceptionally, setting new records and establishing a strong international presence. Our heartfelt thanks go to every participant, proctor, and organizer who contributed to the seamless execution of this memorable event. IX 23

IX 23, the third iteration of IX, Sri Lanka’s first-ever online inter-university designathon, unfolded as a transformative event that harnessed the power of Extended Reality (XR) to reshape UI/UX solutions. This two-phase journey exemplified the fusion of creativity, technology, and global goals. In the initial phase, participants embarked on a mission to provide ingenious UI/UX solutions aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined by the World Health Organization. What set this phase apart was the incorporation of Spatial UI concepts, inspired by Apple’s visionary Vision OS Design standards. This amalgamation of purpose-driven objectives and innovative design principles set the tone for the entire designathon. The culmination of IX 23 was the exhilarating final round, an intense 24-hour physical designathon that demanded participants to create XR-based spatial UI/UX solutions tailored to a specific scenario. This phase required not only technical prowess but also rapid ideation, collaboration, and adaptability. The zenith of the event materialized with participants showcasing their XR-based solutions to a panel of esteemed judges during the grand finale. The presentation of immersive solutions, finely tuned through the 24 hours of iteration and collaboration, captured the spirit of innovation and dedication that defined the event. Ultimately, the top three teams emerged triumphant, their exceptional ideas and designs recognized and celebrated. IX 23 not only marked a significant milestone in Sri Lanka’s technological and design landscape but also stood as a testament to the potential of XR in shaping the future of UI/UX solutions. As the first XR-based UI/UX designathon in Sri Lanka, IX 23 not only expanded horizons but also fostered a community of forward-thinking designers and creators who will undoubtedly leave their mark on the evolving world of technology and design.

IEEEXtreme 16.0

In the past years due to the rise of the pandemic, it was not possible to have the IEEEXtreme programming competition physically at IIT. However, since the country's restrictions on staying isolated were loosening, we took the opportunity to conduct IEEEXtreme physically by hosting the physical hub at IIT GP Square. Furthermore, we also provided an online participation option and thus made the event more accessible to participants. We managed to get 100+ participants registered for IEEEXtreme out of which 80+ came physically and commenced the competitive programming competition.

IX2020 was Sri Lanka's first-ever virtual designathon, which is aimed at all UI/UX designers. The goal of the event was conducted to serve as a platform for designers to test their design skills and win exhilarating prizes for innovative concepts.

Unimate is an ongoing research collaboration between Robert Gordon University (RGU), Aberdeen, Scotland, and the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT), Colombo, Sri Lanka. “Unimate Hackathon” is a virtual hackathon organized by the IEEE Students’ Branch of IIT in collaboration with RGU.The main purpose of this Hackathon is to enhance the Unimate app which delivers digital interventions to self-manage the well-being of your adults.
