The PRESTIGE Event Series, organized by the IEEE CIS Student Branch Chapter of IIT, was a premier initiative aimed at advancing knowledge, collaboration, and innovation in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The series opened with Workshop 01 – Unveiling the Truth About AI by Mr. Ashan Priyadarshana (Sysco LABS), where participants explored the real-world impact of AI and ML while dispelling common misconceptions. Workshop 02 – Building Smarter AI followed, led by Mr. Prasan Ratnayake (Zone24x7), offering practical insights into Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) with Flowise & LangChain for enhanced AI solutions. Continuing the momentum, the AI Meetup brought together professionals and students at Hatch Works Auditorium, featuring Ms. Aloka (Axiata Digital Labs) on how Large Language Models learn to think, and Mr. Ashan Priyadarshana on building AI-driven analytics solutions, paired with valuable networking opportunities. The series concluded with the Final Forum, where leading experts — Mr. Isuru Alagiyawanna, Mr. Sanjaya Elvitigala, Mr. K.D. Jayakody, Mr. Roy Ian, and Mr. Newan Vinthusa — shared their insights on the future of AI, moderated by Ms. Aloka Gunasekara, offering a diverse perspective on industry trends and innovation. The AI Talk – Workshop 1, conducted by Mr. Mahesh Kavinda (Gantner Instruments SEA), explored cutting-edge AI and IoT innovations, including industrial applications, AI-powered business insights, and cybersecurity in smart factories, giving participants a comprehensive view of the technological landscape. Through initiatives like the PRESTIGE Event Series and The AI Talk, the IEEE CIS Student Branch Chapter of IIT successfully created platforms for knowledge exchange, skill development, and industry-academia collaboration, inspiring participants to engage with emerging AI and IoT technologies while preparing them for the future of intelligent systems.

Ignite was a dynamic, two-phase event where the worlds of IT and medicine seamlessly intertwine, igniting the spark of innovation in MedTech. The first phase focused on the foundational pillars of bioinformatics, biomedical engineering, and their transformative impact on the IT field. Through a series of interactive and engaging sessions, we delved into how these fields are shaping the future of healthcare technology. These sessions were designed not only to educate but to inspire the next generation of MedTech pioneers, encouraging them to think creatively and embrace the intersection of technology and medicine. The second phase expanded into a captivating podcast experience, guiding MedTech enthusiasts through the entire journey of creating a MedTech solution. From ideation and research and development, all the way to production and commercialization, this phase provided invaluable insights into the real-world processes of bringing medical technologies to life. At Ignite, participants had the opportunity to witness thrilling MedTech demos, gain groundbreaking insights, and engage with industry experts. With its theme centered around sparking innovation, Ignite was a journey into the future of healthcare, where cutting-edge technology meets the human drive to improve lives.

Tracktion

Tracktion was an engaging two-part robotics workshop series organized by the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society of IIT, tailored for beginners eager to step into the world of robotics. The series was centered around the design, construction, and programming of line-following robots, providing a comprehensive introduction to both the theoretical and practical sides of robotics. Led by experts from RoboticGen, the sessions were designed to be hands-on, interactive, and accessible to participants with little to no prior experience in the field. Workshop 1: Introduction to Robotics and Hardware Fundamentals The first session laid a strong foundation by exploring the core concepts of robotics. Participants were introduced to key components such as microcontrollers, sensors (like IR sensors), and motor drivers. They learned about basic circuit design, wiring, and how different parts of a robot work together. Through live demonstrations and guided practice, participants assembled their own robot chassis and gained familiarity with hardware integration. Workshop 2: Algorithm Development and Software Implementation Building on the first session, the second workshop focused on the logical and programming aspects of robotics. Participants learned how to write code to process sensor input and control the robot’s movements. With guidance from the facilitators, they implemented algorithms to enable the robot to follow a line and navigate through a miniature line maze. The hands-on coding sessions reinforced problem-solving skills and helped participants understand real-time debugging and performance tuning. The Tracktion workshop series stood out for its beginner-friendly approach, practical learning experience, and expert mentorship. By the end of the series, participants walked away with a solid understanding of how to build and program autonomous robots, setting the stage for more advanced projects in robotics and automation.

IndustPro 4.0 is a two-phase career development workshop series organized by the IEEE Computer Society Student Branch Chapter of IIT, aimed at bridging the gap between academia and the tech industry. The series focused on empowering undergraduates with practical knowledge, essential soft skills, and industry insights to thrive in the ever-evolving tech landscape. Phase 01 consisted of three workshops: a panel discussion on discovering diverse career paths, an online workshop on portfolio building, and a session on personal branding and LinkedIn optimization. Building on that momentum, Phase 02 featured two impactful workshops — the first focused on crafting compelling business pitches, and the second offered deep insights into the startup ecosystem. Across both phases, participants had the opportunity to connect with professionals from leading companies, explore various tech career avenues, and gain the confidence to shape their futures with purpose and direction.

RobotNexus 2

RobotNexus 2 was an immersive four-day workshop designed to equip participants with the fundamentals of robotics and IoT, guiding them from foundational theory to real-world application. The workshop covered key concepts such as robotic systems, sensors, actuators, motors, and circuit integration, while also introducing C++ programming for embedded systems. Participants gained hands-on experience working with Arduino, building circuits, and integrating hardware with software to create functional robotic systems. One of the core focuses of RobotNexus 2 was the micromouse project, where attendees delved into algorithm design, wall-following logic, and pathfinding techniques to develop an autonomous robot capable of navigating a maze. The final phase involved assembling, testing, and optimizing the micromouse—bringing together all the skills learned throughout the workshop. By the end of the program, participants had not only enhanced their problem-solving and technical skills but also gained valuable industry-relevant experience in robotics and IoT. With a strong emphasis on practical learning and innovation, RobotNexus continues to be a platform where aspiring engineers can explore, build, and push the boundaries of technology.

WebSpire 2.0, organized by the IEEE Computer Society Student Branch Chapter of IIT, was a transformative workshop series designed to equip aspiring developers with essential web development and UI/UX skills. The initiative provided a structured learning experience through a blend of hands-on workshops and an insightful industry visit, fostering innovation and professional growth among participants. The journey of WebSpire 2.0 began with Building Blocks of the Web, where participants learned the fundamentals of HTML and CSS for structuring and styling websites. Designing for Humans introduced UI/UX principles, visual design, and prototyping using Figma. The final session, The Art of JavaScript & Frameworks, covered JavaScript fundamentals and modern frameworks, enabling participants to build interactive web applications. Beyond the workshops, WebSpire 2.0 provided real-world exposure through an industry visit to Cambio, a leading tech company. Participants gained firsthand insights into software development, industry workflows, and best practices, bridging the gap between theory and application. More than just a workshop series, WebSpire 2.0 was a platform for learning, collaboration, and inspiration. It empowered students to hone their technical skills, embrace user-centric design, and understand industry dynamics, preparing them for future careers in web development. Through expert-led sessions, hands-on projects, and industry exposure, WebSpire 2.0 left a lasting impact, shaping the next generation of developers who will drive the future of the web.

Inception 2025 marked a significant milestone for the IEEE Student Branch at the Informatics Institute of Technology with its Installation Ceremony on January 22, 2025. The ceremony officially inducted the new committees of the IEEE Student Branch and its associated chapters: the IEEE Computer Society, the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society, and the Women in Engineering affinity group. The event also celebrated the inauguration of two new societies: the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society and the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. This momentous occasion marked the start of a new chapter for the student branch, filled with leadership transitions and an array of opportunities for innovation and growth. The event was graced by distinguished guests, with Prof. Shanmuganathan Vasanthapriyan, Chairperson of the IEEE Sri Lanka Section, as the Chief Guest, and Dr. Naomi Krishnarajah, Dean of the IIT School of Computing, as the Guest of Honor. The ceremony was further enriched by the presence of faculty members, counselors, advisers, and colleagues. A special highlight of Inception 2025 was the awards ceremony, which recognized outstanding individuals for their exceptional contributions during the past term. Best volunteers were honored for their selfless service, while project chairpersons were celebrated for the successful completion of their respective projects. Additionally, the outgoing committee members were awarded for their invaluable leadership and dedication, acknowledging their efforts in driving the branch’s initiatives to success. Inception 2025 was a day of celebration and inspiration, paving the way for a term brimming with new ideas, collaboration, and technological advancements. It marked the beginning of an exciting journey, with a collective focus on fostering creativity, innovation, and teamwork across various disciplines in the fields of engineering and technology. Mr. Dhammika Maransinghe, Vice Chairperson of the IEEE Sri Lanka Section, and Ms. Naomi Krishnaraja, Dean of the IIT school of computing, graced the event as Chief Guest and Guest of Honor, respectively. ILLUMINATE’24 – Where Aspirations Meet Achievements, was an inspiring initiative by the IEEE Student Branch of IIT, aimed at empowering aspiring entrepreneurs and fostering a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem in Sri Lanka. The initiative seamlessly blended a captivating YouTube interview series with two impactful community meetups, creating a platform for knowledge-sharing, networking, and growth. It brought together renowned business leaders and startup founders, offering invaluable insights and opportunities for rising entrepreneurs to turn their aspirations into achievements. The YouTube interview series was a central highlight of ILLUMINATE’24, featuring some of Sri Lanka’s most prominent and successful entrepreneurs. Visionaries such as Mr. Yohan Liyanage, Founder & CEO of Altrium; Mr. Dilupa Pathirana, CEO of Barista; Ms. Bernadine Jayasinghe, Managing Director of IES; Mr. Peter D’Almeida, Founder & CEO of N*able; Mr. Dulith Herath, Founder & CEO of Kapruka; and Mr. Bhanuka Harischandra, Founder & CEO of Surge Global, shared their personal journeys and professional insights. Through these interviews, they provided practical advice, inspiration, and actionable tips to help aspiring entrepreneurs navigate the challenges of building and scaling a business. In addition to the digital component, ILLUMINATE’24 successfully hosted two dynamic community meetups, offering an in-person forum for startup founders, industry experts, and like-minded individuals to connect and collaborate. The first meetup, titled Disrupt & Dominate: Accelerate with Innovation, focused on marketing strategies for startup growth and leveraging the digital edge to stay competitive in today’s fast-paced business world. The second meetup, Scaling with Strategy: Fueling Startup Growth, addressed effective fundraising strategies and the journey from revenue generation to tangible results. Both sessions were conducted by seasoned professionals from Sri Lanka’s business and marketing sectors, who shared their expertise and guided participants toward actionable growth strategies. ILLUMINATE’24 was more than just an event series; it was a movement that inspired and equipped a new generation of entrepreneurs to think big and act boldly. From October 26th to 27th, our IEEE Student Branch at IIT took part in the global 24-hour hackathon, IEEEXtreme 18.0, with over 200 teams and 550+ participants joining forces to test their coding skills in this intensive event. The hackathon was a powerful demonstration of our community’s commitment to excellence, as each team pushed the boundaries of creativity and resilience. The day was filled with intense coding sessions, problem-solving challenges, and the energy of collaboration as our participants tackled complex tasks from sunrise to sunrise. Among the extraordinary accomplishments, one team proudly claimed 1st place in Sri Lanka, positioning themselves in the prestigious top 100 globally. This outstanding achievement reflects not only the team’s hard work but also the dedication and preparation that our student branch invests in each participant’s journey. Many of our other teams also performed exceptionally, setting new records and establishing a strong international presence. Our heartfelt thanks go to every participant, proctor, and organizer who contributed to the seamless execution of this memorable event. The hackathon was more than just a competition—it was a remarkable journey of learning, building connections, and creating a strong community of passionate tech enthusiasts. This year’s event was an outstanding celebration of innovation, collaboration, and professional growth in the tech industry, attracting a diverse audience of students, professionals, and tech enthusiasts eager to engage in enriching discussions and networking opportunities. The day featured two remarkable speakers, Mr. Vidura Bandara and Mr. Sampath Thrimavithana, who captivated the audience with their insights and experiences. Mr. Bandara, a Program Manager at IFS and IEEE R10 CS Microsummit South Asian Lead, shared how IEEE empowers individuals to lead and innovate in today’s rapidly evolving tech landscape. His insights resonated deeply with attendees, inspiring many to explore the vast possibilities within the IEEE community. Following Mr. Bandara, Mr. Sampath Thrimavithana, the Chairman of the ICT Skills Council and CHRO at Surge Global, took the stage to share his journey of professional success. He provided valuable insights into career advancement, emphasizing the importance of continuous learning and adaptability in achieving remarkable milestones in the industry. His story motivated many attendees to pursue their aspirations with renewed vigor. In addition to the keynote speeches, the event featured various career development sessions and leadership boosters designed to enhance participants’ skills and knowledge. IX 24

IX 24, the 4th edition of Design IX, Sri Lanka’s premier XR-based designathon organized by the IEEE Student Branch of IIT, concluded with great success, highlighting the creativity and innovation of young designers across the country. Kicking off in August 2024, IX 24 attracted over 160 teams with more than 600 participants from 21 universities. This year’s competition, supported by 20 industry partners, focused on revolutionizing green urban living by the year 2050, challenging participants to push the limits of design thinking and technological innovation. The competition was structured into two phases. In the initial phase, participants were tasked with submitting innovative design concepts aimed at reshaping urban living through sustainable solutions. These submissions were carefully evaluated by a panel of 20 judges from prominent organizations, including 99x, Atmoz, IFS, Ascentic, Virtusa, and Corzent. Following this rigorous assessment, the top 12 teams were selected to advance to the final design challenge. In the lead-up to the finale, four workshops were held to help participants hone their skills and gain critical insights into the field of user experience (UX) design and extended reality (XR). Each workshop saw over 200 participants and was led by industry experts, including Ms. Lishni Tilakaratne from Atmoz, Ms. Oshadhi Vanodhya and Ms. Sanduni Kariyawasam from IFS, Dr. Piyum Fernando from Amazon Lab126, and Ms. Sajani Lokuge and Mr. Mino Gallawatta from IFS and Atmoz, respectively. These sessions provided invaluable guidance, preparing participants for the demanding challenges of the competition. The grand finale, held on the 7th and 8th of September at the IIT auditorium, was the most intense phase of the competition. The top 12 teams engaged in a 24-hour designathon, where they were challenged to bring their ideas to life under significant time pressure. After the designathon, the teams presented their futuristic design solutions to a distinguished panel of judges., including Mr. Hiran Karunananda, Senior Technical Lead UI/UX at Ascentic; Mr. Mino Gallawatta, UX Lead at Atmoz; Ms. Sajani Lokuge, Senior UX Designer at IFS; and Mr. Mark Goonewardene, Senior UI/UX Lead at Surge Global. The competition concluded with a grand awarding ceremony that celebrated the remarkable achievements of the participants. The success of IX 24 was acknowledged by the organizers, who thanked the sponsors, partners, participants and everyone involved for making this event a success. With each passing year, IX continues to grow as a leading design challenge, positioning itself as a catalyst for groundbreaking solutions that can transform the world of tomorrow.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the world’s largest technical professional organization. Established in 2015 at the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT), the IEEE Student Branch now has over 500 student members, the highest in Sri Lanka. The student branch serves as a vital hub for tech exploration, learning, innovation, and professional growth. Initially started in 2016 as a mere coding hackathon, CodeSprint has remarkably evolved into a Startup Battle, a platform that encourages undergraduates to develop innovative solutions to current challenges in a competitive yet coordinated environment. The Student Branch, along with its chapter, the Computer Society and the WIE (Women in Engineering) affinity group, hosted CodeSprint 8 from February to June 2024. This event has established itself as the largest and most influential startup incubator in Sri Lanka’s university landscape for the year, significantly impacting the nation’s academic and entrepreneurial spheres. The Student Branch wrapped up the 8th iteration of CodeSprint on a triumphant note, showcasing the thriving talent of Sri Lanka’s young innovators. This year, the event reached new heights with the participation of 2,500 delegates from 22 universities across the island, presenting over 400 startup ideas. Moreover, the Student Branch collaborated with over 25 company partners and 90+ industry experts in judging, evaluation, and mentoring to ensure the success of the event. “The consistency and success of this journey, fueled by our dedicated partners and mentors, have made this iteration the most impactful startup incubator organized by a university in Sri Lanka,” said Sanuda Kannangara, the Chairperson of the IEEE Student Branch at IIT, during his speech at the Grand Finale. The event unfolded in three strategic phases: Ideate, Prototype, and Startup, attracting top tech industry professionals from across the island to mentor and evaluate the projects. “The energy was palpable as each team pitched their startup ideas, driven by the desire to innovate and excel,” commented Mr. Suresh Michael Peiris, the Co-Founder of Inforwaves. During the Ideate phase, participants unleashed their creativity, crafting compelling software concepts. Subsequent workshops provided insights into turning these ideas into feasible business models. The Prototype phase saw over 1,000 students participate in workshops aimed at creating Minimum Viable Products (MVPs), transitioning their theoretical ideas into tangible products. The climax of CodeSprint 8 was the Grand Finale held at the Galadari Hotel in Colombo, where the top 10 teams, selected after rigorous evaluation, competed in the Startup phase. This final phase not only tested their innovative solutions but also their potential market impact and technical viability. In a historic first, an executive judge panel consisting of five top-tier tech leaders was established for the grand finale. The prestigious panel included Mr. Dulith Herath, the Founder & Chairman of Kapruka.com; Mr. Subodha Perera, the Founder and CEO of Econsulate; Mr. Sanjeewa Alwis, the CEO of BCS Technology International Pty Ltd; Mr. Fayaz Hudah, the Founder of Spiralation; and Mr. Selvaratnam Uthaiyashankar, the SVP & GM of Integration BU at WSO2. “CodeSprint 8 has not only provided a platform for students to showcase their ingenuity but has also played a crucial role in enriching the tech ecosystem in Sri Lanka,” said Mr. Subodha Perera, one of the judges. As the curtains closed on this year’s event, the organizers expressed their gratitude to the sponsors, partners, and all participants whose contributions ensured the overwhelming success of CodeSprint 8. The anticipation for next year’s competition is already building, promising another exciting chapter in nurturing Sri Lanka’s future tech leaders.

Undergraduates from across Sri Lanka participated in this unique competition, where they navigated through a series of carefully crafted challenges and puzzles. RobotNexus is an exclusive event for all Undergraduate students, where we will introduce them to a new dimensional event for the first time. With sessions accommodating 20+ teams, each comprising five members, participants are immersed in a blend of theoretical insights and hands-on experiences. The initial online session drives into robotics and IoT fundamentals, covering basics like robotics principles and understanding IoT components. Participants gain essential knowledge for micro-mouse development, setting the groundwork for subsequent hands-on sessions. The four in-person workshops provide practical experience, where participants apply theoretical knowledge to construct a micro mouse. Key focus areas include micro maze design, robotics programming, IoT integration, sensor technology, and problem-solving strategies.

The IEEE Student Branch of IIT proudly presents IndSight, a premier series of industry visits designed exclusively for undergraduate students. In this global challenge, teams of 3 to 5 IEEE members, each advised and proctored by an IEEE member and supported by an IEEE Student Branch, compete against each other to solve a set of programming problems and gain local and global ranks, certificates, and prizes. Hosted by the IEEE Student Branch of Informatics Institute of Technology, this rigorous event took place within the premises of the IIT School of Computing. Notably, participants not only gathered physically but also connected online to partake in this extreme programming challenge. The Student Branch organized IEEEXtreme 17.0 as a focal point of the Odyssey event series, culminating in this thrilling competition.

IX 23, the third iteration of IX, Sri Lanka’s first-ever online inter-university designathon, unfolded as a transformative event that harnessed the power of Extended Reality (XR) to reshape UI/UX solutions. This two-phase journey exemplified the fusion of creativity, technology, and global goals. In the initial phase, participants embarked on a mission to provide ingenious UI/UX solutions aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined by the World Health Organization. What set this phase apart was the incorporation of Spatial UI concepts, inspired by Apple’s visionary Vision OS Design standards. This amalgamation of purpose-driven objectives and innovative design principles set the tone for the entire designathon. The culmination of IX 23 was the exhilarating final round, an intense 24-hour physical designathon that demanded participants to create XR-based spatial UI/UX solutions tailored to a specific scenario. This phase required not only technical prowess but also rapid ideation, collaboration, and adaptability. The zenith of the event materialized with participants showcasing their XR-based solutions to a panel of esteemed judges during the grand finale. The presentation of immersive solutions, finely tuned through the 24 hours of iteration and collaboration, captured the spirit of innovation and dedication that defined the event. Ultimately, the top three teams emerged triumphant, their exceptional ideas and designs recognized and celebrated. IX 23 not only marked a significant milestone in Sri Lanka’s technological and design landscape but also stood as a testament to the potential of XR in shaping the future of UI/UX solutions. As the first XR-based UI/UX designathon in Sri Lanka, IX 23 not only expanded horizons but also fostered a community of forward-thinking designers and creators who will undoubtedly leave their mark on the evolving world of technology and design.
